    AS 3999 is the standard for putting insulation in properly. It is not about which product you buy — it is about whether the batts and blankets are installed so they actually perform.

    What AS 3999 actually means

    AS 3999 sets out the installation requirements for bulk thermal insulation — the batts and blankets in your walls and ceiling. Its focus is quality of fit: insulation must be installed without gaps, without being compressed, and with the clearances required around heat sources and services. A perfectly good batt performs poorly if it is squashed, torn, or left out around a downlight or pipe.

    Bulk insulation goes into external walls and the ceiling to meet the energy-efficiency provisions of the National Construction Code. AS 3999 governs how it is fitted so the thermal performance designed into your home is the performance you actually get once you are living in it.
