What AS/NZS 4680 actually means
AS/NZS 4680 specifies hot-dip galvanised (zinc) coatings applied to iron and steel articles by dipping them in molten zinc. It sets the coating thickness and quality that determine how long the steel resists corrosion.
Where it applies in your new home
Galvanised coatings protect structural steel members, tie-down and bracing brackets, connectors and fixings. The more corrosive the environment — coastal and humid sites especially — the more the coating matters, because corrosion at a connection weakens the very point a structure relies on.
What VG Inspect checks against it
Where structural steel and connectors are exposed at frame stage, an inspector checks that corrosion protection is intact and appropriate — no bare cut edges left unprotected, no early surface corrosion. In coastal areas this attention increases, because durability provisions are what carry the structure through decades of salt-laden air.
What it does and doesn't cover
AS/NZS 4680 covers hot-dip galvanised coatings on articles such as brackets and members. Continuous coated steel sheet (as used in steel framing) is covered by AS/NZS 1397, and self-drilling screws by AS 3566.
