AS 3610 is the standard for the moulds that hold your slab while it sets. Formwork is temporary — it comes off after the pour — but the shape it creates is permanent.
What AS 3610 actually means
AS 3610 covers the design and construction of formwork: the boards, props and supports that contain wet concrete until it hardens. It addresses how formwork should be built so it holds its shape, stays in position under the weight of the pour, and produces concrete of the required dimensions and finish.
Where it applies in your new home
On a house, formwork shapes the slab and its edge beams. It sets the perimeter, the set-out relative to the boundaries, the depth of the footing beams and the level of the finished slab. Everything the concrete becomes is defined by the form it is poured into.
What VG Inspect checks against it
At the pre-pour inspection the formwork is checked alongside the reinforcement and services: set-out against the plans, edge beam depths, and whether the boards are level and secure. Because the pour is imminent, any issue is reported promptly so it can be corrected before concrete commits it. Every finding is photographed.
What it does and doesn't cover
AS 3610 covers the formwork itself. The concrete design is governed by AS 3600, the residential slab design by AS 2870, and the fill and compaction beneath by AS 3798. Formwork is the stage where those designs are given their physical shape.
