
AS/NZS 1554.1 is the standard for the joins in structural steel. The members carry the load, but the welds are what hold them together — and a chain is only as strong as its links.
What AS/NZS 1554.1 actually means
AS/NZS 1554.1 governs the welding of structural steel: how welds should be made, their size and quality, and how they are inspected. It exists because a connection failure can be as serious as a member failure.
Where it applies in your new home
Welded connections appear wherever structural steel is used — steel beams and posts, base plates, brackets and steel-framed elements. The welds join those members into a structure that behaves as the engineer designed.
What VG Inspect checks against it
Where welded steel connections are visible at frame stage, an inspector checks that the welds are present, appropriately sized and free of obvious defects, and that they match the engineered connection detail. Detailed weld testing is a specialist's role; the on-site check is that the connections exist and look sound before they are enclosed.
What it does and doesn't cover
AS/NZS 1554.1 covers structural steel welding. The steel members themselves are covered by AS 1163, corrosion protection by AS/NZS 4680, and cold-formed steel framing by AS/NZS 4600 and the NASH Standard.
