AS/NZS 3000 — known as the Wiring Rules — is the electrical standard. It is included here for one important reason: to be clear about where a building inspection ends and licensed electrical certification begins.
What AS/NZS 3000 actually means
AS/NZS 3000 sets the requirements for electrical installations — how wiring, switchboards, circuits and protection must be installed to be safe. It is the domain of licensed electricians, who certify the compliance of their own work.
Where it applies in your new home
Every circuit in your home is installed under AS/NZS 3000. The electrical rough-in happens in the wall frame, and the fit-off and final testing before handover.
What VG Inspect checks — and doesn't
A building inspection covers building work: structure, waterproofing, finishes and the QBCC Standards and Tolerances. It does not certify electrical work. Where something electrical is visibly incomplete or of obvious concern at an inspection, it is noted and referred to a licensed electrician, but the compliance sign-off is theirs. Being clear about this scope is part of an honest report.
What it does and doesn't cover
AS/NZS 3000 covers electrical installations. Gas is covered by AS/NZS 5601, plumbing by AS/NZS 3500 — all licensed-trade responsibilities distinct from the building inspection.
