    AS/NZS 5601 — Gas Installations

AS/NZS 5601 is the standard for gas installations. Like electrical work, gas compliance is certified by licensed gasfitters — it sits outside the scope of a building inspection.

AS/NZS 5601 is the gas standard. It appears here, like the electrical Wiring Rules, to draw an honest line around what a building inspection does and does not cover.

    What AS/NZS 5601 actually means

AS/NZS 5601 sets the requirements for gas installations — pipework, appliances and their safe installation. It is the domain of licensed gasfitters, who certify the compliance of their own work.

Where it applies in your new home

If your home has gas — cooktop, hot water or heating — the gas installation is carried out and certified under AS/NZS 5601 by a licensed gasfitter.

What VG Inspect checks — and doesn't

A building inspection assesses building work against the QBCC Standards and Tolerances and the relevant building standards. It does not certify gas work. Where something gas-related is visibly incomplete at an inspection it is noted and referred to a licensed gasfitter, but the compliance sign-off is theirs. Reporting scope honestly is part of a trustworthy inspection.

What it does and doesn't cover

AS/NZS 5601 covers gas installations. Electrical work is covered by AS/NZS 3000 and plumbing by AS/NZS 3500 — separate licensed trades, separate certifications.

A VG Inspect QBCC-licensed inspector (QBCC Licence 1318443) inspects building work and refers trade certification to the licensed disciplines. Call 07 3180 8041 or book an inspection online.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is gas checked in a building inspection?

Gas installations are governed by AS/NZS 5601 and certified by licensed gasfitters, who are responsible for their own compliance. A building inspection covers building work, not gas certification. Any gas concern noted at an inspection is referred to a licensed gasfitter.
