    NASH Standard — Residential Steel Framing

    The NASH Standard is the rulebook behind a cold-formed steel house frame. If your new home is framed in light-gauge steel rather than timber, this is the standard that says how it should be designed and put together.

    What the NASH Standard actually means

    NASH — the National Association of Steel-Framed Housing — publishes the standard that gives cold-formed steel framing a deemed-to-satisfy pathway under the National Construction Code. "Deemed-to-satisfy" means a builder can follow a recognised set of prescribed solutions — member sizes, screw types and counts, bracing and tie-down details — and be taken to have met the Code, without commissioning a one-off structural design for the house.

    It is the steel-frame counterpart to AS 1684 for timber, and it sits on top of the engineering standard for cold-formed steel members, AS/NZS 4600.

    Where it applies in your new home

    The NASH Standard governs the structural steel frame: wall frames, bracing, floor and roof framing, and the connections that hold them together and tie them down against wind. In much of South East Queensland — a high-wind part of the country — those tie-down and bracing details matter, because they are what keeps the roof and walls attached under load.

    What VG Inspect checks against it

    At the frame-stage inspection, a steel frame is checked against the engineered design and the relevant standard: the screw type and corrosion class, the number and pattern of fixings at each connection, the bracing straps and their tensioning, and the tie-down at the top plate and truss connections. These are verified while the frame is stood and open, before the pre-plaster trades and linings cover them for good.

    Every finding is documented with photographs and issued the same day so anything short of the standard can be corrected before it disappears behind plasterboard.

    What it does and doesn't cover

    The NASH Standard covers the structural steel frame and its connections. It does not cover the concrete slab beneath (AS 2870), the waterproofing of wet areas (AS 3740) or termite management (AS 3660). Where a proprietary steel framing system is used, that system's own installation manual carries the specific screw counts and bracket references — and the built frame should match it.

    Does a steel frame still need inspecting?

Those connections are verified at the frame-stage inspection, before linings cover them — the point at which anything short of the standard can still be corrected.
