
AS 4055 is why two identical-looking houses can have different frames. It gives each home a wind classification, and that class quietly governs how strongly the frame is braced and tied down.
What AS 4055 actually means
AS 4055 sets out how to determine the wind classification of a house — N1 to N6 in normal (non-cyclonic) regions and C1 to C4 in cyclonic ones. The class depends on the wind region, the terrain category, the topography and the shielding from surrounding buildings. It is a simplified housing-specific route to the wind loads that would otherwise be calculated under AS/NZS 1170.2.
Where it applies in your new home
Your wind class drives the structural requirements of the frame: how many bracing units each wall line needs, and how strong the tie-down connections must be from the roof down to the slab. In much of South East Queensland, classes such as N2 and N3 are common, with higher classes on exposed sites.
What VG Inspect checks against it
At the frame-stage inspection, the frame is checked against the engineered design for its assigned wind class: bracing units counted per wall line, strap installation and nail patterns verified, and tie-down connections confirmed from the top plate through to the truss anchors. Under-bracing or missing tie-down straps are serious findings, because they are what fails under wind — and they become invisible once linings go on.
What it does and doesn't cover
AS 4055 covers the wind classification for housing. The framing detail that responds to it is covered by AS 1684 (timber) or the NASH Standard (steel). The general structural loads sit under AS/NZS 1170.
